Although he risks everything to desert the army, it’s largely a selfish decision – he feels that the cost to himself of continuing to kill would be greater than the costs of running – and he spends the rest of the book wondering what type of man he is going to be now. The novel follows Chike’s experiences wrestling with the question of what it takes, what it costs, to be a good man and have accountability for your actions.
